Program Overview
The Tribal Energy Plan Grant supports Tribal Nations in developing comprehensive energy plans that guide future clean energy investments, strengthen energy resilience, and advance Tribal energy sovereignty.
Funding of up to $50,000 is available to support planning activities that help communities identify energy priorities, evaluate renewable energy opportunities, and prepare for future project implementation.
Eligible Planning Activities
Grant funding may be used for activities such as:
Comprehensive Tribal energy planning
Renewable energy feasibility studies
Energy assessments and resource evaluations
Community engagement and stakeholder outreach
Strategic planning for clean energy development
Technical and consultant support related to energy planning
Program Goals
The Tribal Energy Planning Grant helps Tribal communities:
Develop long-term energy strategies aligned with Tribal priorities
Identify opportunities to reduce energy costs and improve reliability
Build a roadmap for renewable energy development
Strengthen community resilience and energy independence
Prepare for future funding and project implementation
Eligibility
Eligible applicants include:
Federally recognized Tribal governments in the Lower 48 states and Alaska
Tribal government departments and enterprises
Tribal housing authorities
Tribally led 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations
Tribally controlled or operated schools, including Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) schools, and public schools serving Tribal communities
To qualify as Tribal-led, an organization must have a majority (more than 51%) of its board of directors and executive leadership who are American Indian or Alaska Native.
