Tribal Energy Alternatives Education and Workforce Development Approach and Philosophy

With over 15 years of hands-on experience and commitment to serving tribes, Tribal Energy Alternatives approaches workforce and education development from a holistic perspective. TEA sees tribal members as the leaders within the tribal renewable energy industry and understands that energy sovereignty does not happen without our tribal members leading the way.  The tribal renewable energy industry is robust and offers many different career pathways including solar pv installers, grant writers, project managers, policy makers, etc.

TEA’s Education and Workforce department is built on a simple philosophy: when Tribal members have access to training, resources, and career pathways, they become the drivers of their community’s clean energy transition. We invest in handson learning, leadership development, and long-term capacity building so Tribal Nations can design, install, and maintain renewable energy systems on their own terms. Additionally, TEA’s curriculum is curated to support Career and Technical Education models with an emphasis on tribal career development.

Across Indian Country, we partner with Tribal communities to expand skills, create jobs, and grow the next generation of Tribal renewable energy leaders. Our curriculum is infused with industry aligned standards and practices and embedded with the foundations of transferrable skillsets to make for flexible economic mobility. Whether someone is just beginning their journey or ready to advance into specialized roles, our programs offer accessible, culturally grounded pathways into the clean energy workforce.

TEA strives to ensure training participants are provided with paid learning opportunities with additional wrap around services for tribal members.

Students Training
Installation Basic Training

One of GRID’s key training programs is Installation Basics Training (IBT), a competency-based certificate program designed to develop the skills that are most relevant to entry-level solar installation jobs and related construction employment fields. IBT focuses on individual certificates in industry-recognized skills, providing trainees with valuable hands-on training and access to potential employment opportunities.

Tribal Energy Alternatives offers many engaging ways to those that are interested in pursuing a career in the renewable energy field. There are opportunities for those interested to visit install sites, demo installation days and culturally centered curriculum conversations.

Some of these continued learning opportunities include our leadership programs such as our Tribal Solar Innovators Fellowship and our Summer Associates program. The Tribal Energy Associates programs is a paid opportunity to explore different sectors of the tribal renewable energy field. The Tribal Energy Innovator Fellowship is an opportunity for those already engaged in Tribal renewable energy to gain access to guidance, mentorship and connections in the industry.

We encourage continued learning in the field by facilitating opportunities for tribal members to continue their education beyond installation training and creating pathways for careers for tribal members.

We develop our workforce opportunities with an emphasis on transferrable skillsets and provide some wrap around supports such as resume building and professional socialization. We have built up our partnerships with Tribal Colleges and Universities as well as have funding opportunities available to students in the form of scholarships and internship.
